EdgeCore Badge Use Policy

Updated October 8, 2024

The purpose of this policy is to outline the correct way to badge in and out of secure areas. Following these guidelines will ensure security remains a top priority, help reduce alarms and keep people moving safely around the building.

  1. As you approach a door, knock first to ensure no one is on the other side.
    • This will reduce the risk of swinging the door open and having it strike someone on the other side.
    • If the door is transparent and you can easily identify there is no one on the other side of the door, no knock is warranted.
    • If individuals leaving and entering the facility knock at the same time, the person entering the facility shall proceed first.
  1. After you knock, swipe your badge against the reader and, if required, scan your finger on the biometric reader.

  1. If you are granted access and the door unlocks, open the door and proceed through it then check to be sure the door is secured (closed) behind you.
    • It is your responsibility to confirm that no one tailgates behind you.
    • If you are denied access and the door does not unlock, attempt the process one more time.
    • If you are denied access again, STOP and contact the security team at 480-923-3708.
  1. Once the door is completely closed, the next individual can begin the badging process.
    • If there is no badge reader at the door, multiple individuals are authorized to use the door at once. The last individual through the door has the responsibility to confirm the door is closed behind them.

Important Notes

  • Your badge will be scoped to allow site access to no more than what is necessary to complete your work.
  • Badges must be worn at all times. Do not share or loan your badge to anyone. If a badge is lost, it must be reported to Physical Security immediately. Personnel with a visitor/escort badge must remain with their escort at all times.
  • Badging in and out of secure areas is required and failure to follow badging procedures will result in an alarm. If an alarm occurs, remain at the alarm site and wait for Physical Security to arrive. If you cannot exit a room and have no way to communicate, you can use emergency egress after 10 minutes.
  • To prevent an anti-pass back (APB) alarm: go through the door when access is granted; do not tailgate; and do not exceed your authorized access period.
  • To prevent a door forced open (DFO) alarm: pay attention to secure door signs; do not use emergency exits unless there is an emergency; and never touch a secure door without badging and receiving “access granted.”
  • To prevent a door held open (DHO) alarm: always pull a door shut after entering; do not keep any door open longer than 60 seconds; and do not prop any door open.

Security is everyone’s responsibility. Following this badging procedure will help maintain a secure and safe facility.
